چکیده

STAR-sHAPED INCLUIONS have been observed in multinucleated giant cells as far back as 1890.1 Perhaps the most comprehensive study of the asteroid bodies, as seen under the light microscope is that of Cunnngham' who e d in 1951 that "in tests for collagen, Masson's trichrome stain and Mallory's connective tissue stain showed negative results. Wilder's stain for reticuhlm wa uni negative. Cunningham also concluded that the fining Of asteroid bodies in tuberculous and other epithelioid granulomas as well as in a variety of foreign body reactions strongly indicated that these inclsions we not specific for any disease entity. In a more recent review, Cunningham8 stated that asteroids are often seen in cases of sarcoidosis, either alone or associated with Saumnnnn bodies, and that 'histochemical and microincineration studies seem to indicate that these inclis are organic prein structures, possibly complex lipoyproteis. This paper deals with the fine structure of asteroid bodies in Langhans type, multinucleated giant cells of sarcoid granulomas. The finding that collagen fibers constitute the core of asteroid formations lends support to the thesis that epithelioid cells are capable of transformation ito fibroblasts during the healing of epitheloid granulomas. A preliminary eport of this work appears elsewhere.4

A Case of Scar Sarcoidosis of The Eyelid

PURPOSE We report the case of a patient with scar sarcoidosis that developed along a previous eyelid scar. There was no evidence of ocular or systemic sarcoidosis. METHODS A 29-year-old man presented with a mass on his right eyelid that had been present for two month. On ocular examination an erythematous, firm, and non-tender mass was diffusely palpable along the upper and lower eyelid scar....

Asteroid bodies: products of unusual microtubule dynamics in monocyte-derived giant cells. An immunohistochemical study.

We have studied asteroid bodies (ABs) of multinucleated giant cells (MGCs) in a series of sarcoid and foreign body granulomas with a standard streptavidin-biotin peroxidase technique, using commercial antibodies against collagen, vimentin and tubulin on routinely processed tissue as well as, in one case, on fresh frozen sections (FS). Our findings clearly indicate that ABs are products of the m...

Wolbach and Schaumann type inclusions in the giant cells in leprosy probable value in prognosis.

Although the presence of giant cells in any type of lesion in leprosy is not a rarity, the presence of inclusions in their cytoplasm is infrequent. We do not refer to the fatty content in the category of inclusions, but to the bodies known as cytoplasmic inclusions of Wolbach (12) and those of Schaumann (10). Wolbach described and depicted, with photomicrographs and colored drawings, intracellu...

Macular hole in the shaken baby syndrome.

these intraocular granulomas were situated near arterioles, capillaries, or venules. The choriocapillaris itself did not show any sign of acute or chronic vasculitis. Furthermore, generalized granulomas were found in lung parenchyma, lymph nodes, heart, liver, and spleen. One could argue that the generalized granulomas with multinucleated giant cells are in line with advanced sarcoidosis. In fa...

Report of a case of subcutaneous sarcoidosis

In this article we present a 53-year-old lady, who had progressive indurated skin lesions on her both forearms since 3 months ago, without skin discoloration. Chest x-ray showed parahilar lymphadenopathy, in high resolution CT (HRCT) scan evaluation multiple lymph nodes in upper and middle mediastinum were reported. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) level was increased to 81 (normal 5-5...
